FAQs: Before the Event

What is the Volunteer Hub all about?

The Volunteer Hub is where all documents related to the event will be uploaded – this will include such information as the volunteer briefing document, vehicle plans, key locations and any other information that will be useful to you on the event. We love our volunteers to come to the event as prepared as possible so please have a read of all the documents under the relevant event dropdown.

I don't see my event on the Volunteer Hub.

Each specific event’s information will be uploaded 4 weeks prior to the start date of that event so if you don’t see yours here, please check back closer to the time of the event.

I've read the documents but I'm still not sure of what to do?

If you aren’t sure on anything relating to your role on the event, please ask! You will have received an email with information about these documents from one of the team, so feel free to drop them an email of give us call if you need to ask anything.

What kit do I wear to volunteer?

On the event you will be provided with a black Threshold t-shirt to wear, as well as a hi-vis which must be warn at all times to be identifiable to participants as well as other crew and volunteers. As well as this, we recommend wearing comfortable footwear and always packing those waterproofs – you can never trust the British weather! A full kit list is available at the top of this page.

Is it too late to refer a friend?

No, it is not too late to encourage a friend to sign up unless we’re closer than 2 weeks to the event.

Do I get my travel expenses covered?

Yes, we cover up to £100 of travel expenses.

FAQs: What will my day look like?

What roles can I expect to be taking on during these events?

The route has a number of pit stops where you can be part of the team to help the participants refuel for the next leg of their challenge and encourage them to keep pushing on. Or if you prefer to cheer our amazing runners and walkers over the finish line and award them with their hard-earned medals, then coming along with your loudest cheer!

What support is given to me as a volunteer?

Whatever your role on the event, you will be given all the necessary information to be able to carry this out to the best of your ability. You will be provided details of where you will need to be and when, and what you will need to bring with you. You will also have an experienced team manager with you on the day if you are unsure of anything.

What provisions will be given to me as a volunteer?

While volunteering you will be provided with all food and drink, so you won’t need to worry about bringing anything with you. If required, you will be provided with your own tent and camping mat, you will just need to bring sleeping bag etc.

What is the length of volunteer shifts?

Volunteer shifts are usually around 8 hours per day, but you will be notified of your start and finish times at the event.

Can I choose what role I get given?

Yes, within reason. We will aim to find a role and location that suits you. Please apply via the form and one of the team will be in touch to discuss further.

Can I work with my friend who is also volunteering?

Yes, within reason. If you let us know via volunteers@thresholdsports.co.uk we can make note of this request.

Where can I stay if I need to travel on a different day to my shift?

Camping is available from Friday evening. Volunteer shifts usually allow you to travel on the same day.

If I'm volunteering on multiple days, where can I stay?

You are more than welcome to camp among the participants and crew members. You will need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow with you, but you will be provided with a tent.

How do I contact people on the event?

We recommend that Volunteers have a charged mobile phone on them at all times. There will be phone charging facilities on at basecamp so please ensure you bring your charger and that it is clearly labelled. There will also be generators at the overnight pit stop so you will also be able to recharge your battery there. There will usually be a crew member with you at all times so they will be able to help you out if you are unsure of anything.

Will I get breakfast/lunch/dinner on the event?

Yes, once you arrive at one of our events all meals will be included for you, as well as non-alcoholic drinks. Ahead of the event, you will be asked for any dietary requirements so that we can ensure everyone is catered for.

FAQs: Post-Volunteering Experience

How do I claim my expenses?

After the event, you will need to create an invoice and send this to us so that we can process the payment. If you are using public transport, please ensure you keep the receipts. If you are driving your own vehicle, mileage can be claimed back at 45p per mile. You can find the expenses claim form at the top of this page.
